چکیده

Strategic interactions between two-sided platforms depend not only on whether their decision variables are strategic complements or substitutes as for one-sided firms, but also -and crucially soon whether or not the platforms subsidize one side of the market in equilibrium. For example, with prices being strategic complements across platforms, we show that a cost-reducing investment by one firm may have a positive effect on its rival’s profits and a negative effect on its own profits when one side is subsidized in equilibrium. By contrast, if platforms make positive margins on both sides, the same investment has the regular, expected effects. Our analysis implies that the strategy space and the logic of competitive advantage are fundamentally different in two-sided markets relative to one-sided markets.

Sequential moves and Comparative Statics in Strategic Market Games

Strategic market games model strategic exchange economies as noncooperative simultaneous moves games. A recent paper by Bloch and Ghosal (J. Econ. Theory, 74 (1997), 368{384.) has shown that strategic market games might exhibit a rather counterintuitive comparative statics property: an increase in the number of traders on the own side of the market might increase the equilibrium utility for any...

Evolved Perception and the Validation of Simulation Models

We consider the interactions among sellers in mature, iterated oligopolies. In order to calibrate and validate simulation models of strategic interactions in these markets against historical data, the researcher soon confronts the issue of the curse of dimensionality of the number of possible states of the market. The paper presents a model of perception, belief, action, and outcome, and uses i...

On Trade in Bilateral Oligopolies with Altruistic and Spiteful Agents

This paper studies the effects of altruism and spitefulness in a two-sided market in which agents behave strategically and trade according to the ShapleyShubik mechanism. By assuming that altruistic agents have concerns for others on the opposite side of the market, it shows that agents always find advantageous to trade. However, they prefer to stay out of the market and consume their endowment...

Competing in Several Areas Simultaneously: The Case of Strategic Asset Markets

We characterize the structure of Nash equilibria for a certain class of asset market games. In equilibrium, different assets have different returns, and (risk neutral) investors with different wealth hold portfolios with different structures. In equilibrium, an asset’s return is inversely related to the elasticity of its supply. The larger an investor, the more diversified is his portfolio. Sma...
